Merlin garage door openers do not use a battery, unless your motor has a backup battery system installed. If your opener includes a backup battery, it will typically be a 12V rechargeable battery, specific to the model.

If you face operational issues like a power outage, you can manually disengage the motor by pulling the red release cord hanging from the opener. This will disconnect the motor from the door, allowing you to open or close the door by hand.

No, Chamberlain and Merlin garage door openers are not the same. While they may share similar core functionality, there are important differences between them.

Chamberlain openers are designed for DIY installation, whereas Merlin openers are intended for professional installation. They also differ in performance specifications such as maximum door weight, peak pulling force, and rated door area. Additionally, Merlin models may support a broader range of accessories, integrations, more advanced safety features & warranty conditions. You can refer to product manuals for full details.  

Although both brands are part of the Chamberlain Group, they are tailored to different user needs and installation preferences.

This can depend on the make and type of your garage door. Generally, Merlin recommends an annual service of your door to ensure that your access remains seamless. To connect myQ to your garage door opener, you’ll first need to confirm that your door and motor are compatible with myQ technology. myQ Connectivity is compatible with sectional and roller door openers. Once confirmed, here’s how to connect:

1. Install the myQ Connectivity Kit – this kit includes a gateway and safety beams, both of which are required for setup. If you already have Merlin safety beams installed, you can purchase just the gateway.
2. Download the myQ App from the App Store or Google Play.
3. Follow the prompts in the app to add your garage door or gate opener.
4. You're connected! You can now control your door or gate remotely from your smartphone.

The installation of Merlin openers is done through our network of trusted dealers who ensure hassle-free and safe installation every time, keeping your family comfortable and property’s access points protected. Merlin openers are not available for DIY installation.

Merlin garage door openers don’t have a simple “reset” function. If your door or motor is experiencing issues, it’s best to contact your dealer or our Customer Service team for guidance. They can help diagnose the issue and advise on the correct steps to restore your opener’s functionality.

After a power outage, your Merlin garage door opener may need to be re-engaged manually. If the motor was disengaged during the outage (e.g. using the red release cord), for roller doors simply pull the cord again to reconnect the motor to the door mechanism. Once re-engaged, press your remote or wall button to test operation. If the door doesn’t respond, we recommend you contact our Customer Service team for assistance.

While both models belong to Merlin’s SilentDrive range and offer reliable performance, they are designed for different needs. The MR655 is suited for single roller doors and comes with a 5-year warranty. The MR855, on the other hand, is built for larger or heavier roller doors, offering a more powerful motor, support for battery backup, and advanced safety features, along with a 7-year warranty. 

Both models are compatible with myQ smart technology, but the MR855 provides greater flexibility and durability for more demanding applications. A learn button is located on the garage door unit itself. It is used to program your remotes when the garage door is installed. This button is essential for configuring your garage door opener to work with your remotes.

While some universal remotes may work with Merlin motors, we recommend using genuine Merlin remotes to ensure optimal performance and compatibility. Genuine Merlin remotes are specifically designed to work seamlessly with Merlin systems, helping you avoid potential issues with connectivity, range, or functionality that can arise with third-party alternatives. It is important to note that Merlin does not conduct any testing on third party remotes and cannot verify their compatibility with genuine Merlin openers.

You can program up to 180 individual remotes to a single Merlin opener. This is ideal for shared access environments where multiple users need entry. Each remote is uniquely coded, allowing secure and flexible access management. If you need help managing your remotes, you can refer to our Support page or contact our Customer Service team for assistance with remote programming, deletion, or system upgrades.

You can delete lost or stolen remotes by erasing all programmed transmitter codes from your opener. However, please note that this process will remove all remotes, meaning you’ll need to reprogram any existing remotes afterward.

To proceed, refer to the “Erase All Transmitter Codes” section in your user manual, followed by the Wireless Programming (Remote Accessories) instructions to reprogram your remotes. If you need assistance, our Support page or Customer Service team can guide you through the process.

To replace the battery in your Merlin remote:

1. Open the remote casing – this may require a small screwdriver or simply pulling the casing apart depending on the model.
2. Locate the battery – it’s usually positioned behind the circuit board inside the remote.
3. Remove the old battery and replace it with a new one of the same type (commonly a CR2032 or CR2025 coin cell battery, depending on the model).
4. Reassemble the remote and test it to ensure it's working properly.

When fitted to a Merlin garage door or gate opener, The Protector System (Safety IR Beams) reliably stops your door or gate from closing when the beam is obstructed or broken. This essential safety feature helps prevent injury or damage to people, pets, or vehicles.

Safety IR Beams are also a required accessory to enable full functionality of myQ Connectivity through your smartphone. This includes the ability to remotely control your garage door or gate, ensuring that potential hazards are minimised and your home remains safe and secure.

Yes, depending on the number of buttons (channels) your remote features. For instance, the E960M Standard Remote Control has four buttons, and each button can be programmed to operate different Merlin garage door or gate openers. For each remote control, please check the compatibility carefully before trying to program it to an opener. We recommend using our online compatibility tool to ensure your remote is compatible with your opener  

For security reasons, we recommend reprogramming your opener to ensure only new remotes can control your garage or gate. You can purchase a replacement remote through our online store, on Amazon, at Bunnings, or via the Merlin dealer network. myQ is a cloud-based software that monitors and controls your myQ-compatible garage door and gate opener remotely. By using a compatible smartphone or Apple Watch with the myQ App installed, you can check the status of your garage door or gate and open and close them remotely. The myQ App will also send notifications of any door or gate activity to your smartphone or Apple Watch.

When you make a request, your smartphone or Apple Watch communicates with the myQ servers, which then communicate with your garage door or gate opener via your home’s router.

Your garage door or gate opener needs to be connected to your home’s internet, either directly to your Wi-Fi or via a plug-and-play device known as an internet gateway. The method of connecting depends on the opener you have.

Set-up is easy and takes just a couple of minutes. To operate your garage door or gate via the myQ App, the installation of monitored entrapment protection (Safety IR Beams) is required. This ensures your garage door or gate will reverse if someone or something is obstructing it, preventing damage to property, serious injury, or even death. It is also a safety requirement under Australian/New Zealand Standards.

The myQ app promotes various “Works with” partners that allow users to monitor and control their door using these partner apps. Each of these partnerships is based on regional relationships. 

Currently, myQ does not work with Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, Amazon Key or any car brands in Australia or New Zealand

myQ allows you to monitor and control your garage door and gate no matter where you are, from your smartphone, tablet, or Apple Watch. It sends real-time alerts and notifications when the garage door or gate is opened, closed, or left open for a period of time. You can also easily check when your garage or gate has been accessed via the History tab in the App.
